A father and his middle-aged son have been arrested for the death of the father's wife and son's mother at their home in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, as they were apparently also attempting to take their own lives, authorities said Wednesday.
According to the Ilsan Seobu Police Station, the two men were found at Jamsil Hangang Park, a riverside park along the Han River in southeastern Seoul, Tuesday night. A passerby spotted them and called police, leading to their rescue.
Following their rescue, the two men reportedly admitted to the death of the woman in her 80s.
Police later discovered her body in the family’s apartment in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang. The suspects, identified as a man in his 80s and his son in his 50s, were taken into custody.
Authorities believe the killing took place Monday, the day before the father and son traveled to Seoul. After the crime, they reportedly went to Jamsil Hangang Park, where they attempted to take their own lives at around 8:30 p.m.
Investigators suspect financial difficulties may have been a factor, though they are still working to determine the exact motive. Police have requested an autopsy from the National Forensic Service to establish the precise cause of death.
