A coalition of leaders representing seven major religions in South Korea called on the public to respect a pending decision by the Constitutional Court on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, which could come as early as next week.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the Korean Council of Religious Leaders, which includes the heads of Buddhist, Protestant, Catholic and Confucian organizations, said democracy is built on the strength of due process and rejecting due process would block the country’s path forward.
The Constitutional Court, as the last bastion of due process, will hand out a fair ruling, the statement said, highlighting the council’s faith in the institution and urging the public to unite behind a shared respect for the court’s decision.
Yoon is standing trial to determine whether his brief imposition of martial rule in December violated the Constitution, an issue that has deepened the political divide as rallies for and against impeachment threaten social stability.
Yoon, impeached in December by the opposition-controlled National Assembly, is also undergoing a separate criminal trial, charged with leading an insurrection.
