Police said Tuesday they decided to disclose the identity of the teacher this week accused of stabbing an 8-year-old student to death at an elementary school in the central city of Daejeon.

The female teacher in her 40s confessed to stabbing the student after the girl was found with stab wounds in a school building on Feb. 10. The girl was later pronounced dead at a hospital due to excessive bleeding.

The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency decided to disclose the suspect's name, age and photos on its website on Wednesday, with the information to remain public through April 11.

The decision was made in consideration of the seriousness of the incident and the opinion of the bereaved family, among other factors, and the suspect did not raise objections, according to the agency.

Police suspect the teacher had likely premeditated the alleged crime as she prepared the weapon beforehand. An investigation is under way into her motivation and other details.

The teacher was found beside the student with stab wounds that may have been self-inflicted. She was arrested last week after receiving treatment.
